Qui a lu l'ouvre publiée de Yann Moix sait déjà qu'il est prisonnier d'un passé qu'il vénère alors qu'il y fut lacéré, humilité, fracassé. Mais ce cauchemar intime de l'enfance ne faisait l'objet que d'allusions fugaces ou était traité sur un mode burlesque alors qu'il constitue ici le cour du roman et qu'il est restitué dans toute sa nudité. Pour la première fois, l'auteur raconte l'obscurité ininterrompue de l'enfance,  en deux grandes parties (dedans/dehors) où les mêmes années sont revisitées en autant de brefs chapitres (scandés par les changements de classe, de la maternelle à la classe de mathématiques spéciales).
Dedans  : entre les murs de la maison familiale. Dehors  : l'école, les amis, les amours. Roman de l'enfance qui raconte le cosmos inhabitable où l'auteur a habité, où il habite encore, et qui l'habitera jusqu'à sa mort, car d'Orléans, capitale de ses plaies, il ne pourra jamais s'échapper. Un texte habité, d'une poésie et d'une beauté rares, où chaque paysage, chaque odeur, chaque mot,   semble avoir été fixé par des capteurs de sensibilité saturés de malheur, dans ce présentéisme des enfants martyrs.
Aucun pathos ici, aucune plainte, mais une profonde et puissante mélancolie qui est le chant des grands traumatisés.
